Nyansapo (The Wisdom Knot): Toward an African Philosophy of Education

Okrah, K.A. (2003). Nyansapo (The Wisdom Knot): Toward an African Philosophy of Education. Routledge.

This study examines the issues of indigenous philosophies, which are embedded in different aspects of socialization process among the Akan of Ghana. The research explores the possibility of forging a new future that builds on the positive aspects of their past and present and on carefully chosen ideas, methods and technology from abroad.

Okrah explains that Akans use symbols and proverbs in their daily expressions.  The ability to use proverbs and figures of speech represents intelligence and wisdom.  “Nyansapo” means “wisdom knot” implying that there are underlying meanings behind all symbols and activities of the Akan people, and that a person must have profound insight and intelligence to truly understand the meanings of their actions.
